Worth Seeing, But Doesn't Live Up to the First

Review

If you are just looking for a Super Mario movie, this will more than fulfill its purpose. The sounds, music, and characters are immediately recognizable. That includes a few characters from other Nintendo franchises that whose appearances I won't spoil. The animation itself was also great.

The quality is knocked because the plot itself left much to be desired especially since the first movie showed they can have the Super Mario experience and still make it a plot worthwhile. The run time for the movie is even about ninety minutes which falls in line with the first movie.

The problem was that this time around there wasn't much plot compared to the movie seemingly trying to fit in as many references as possible. The references were all great, but it came at the cost of the story. With eight minutes to go, I was assuming it would end on a cliff hanger because I couldn't imagine how the movie would wrap everything up. Turns out, they just went ahead and did the bare minimum to close things up. The movie could have used another fifteen minutes or just taking out fifteen minutes worth of references. Parts of it just need a little expanded details and/or time to "breathe."

Closing / Recommendation

I still fully recommend the movie if you're a Nintendo fan. It will more than serve its purpose. Just don't expect it to hit as much as the first one did.
