Sports mockumentry rivals Tracy Morgan's best work
Review
Tracy Morgan is the lead of this incredibly fun cast as he plays retired NFL MVP Reggie Dinkins. Reggie Dinkins was ran out of the league for gambling and mostly disappeared from the public's eye. The cast also includes Daniel Radcliffe who is playing the director filming the documentary, Arthur Tobin. Both Morgan and Radcliffe doing an amazing job bringing these two to life. The entire cast works so well together overall that I didn't even miss a second where those two leads weren't on the screen. Erika Alexander as Reggie's ex-wife Monica Reese-Dinkins, Jalyn Hall as Reggie's son Carmelo Dinkins, Precious Way as Reggie's fiancée Brina, and Bobby Moynihan as Reggie's best friend Rusty Boyd are the four that round out the rest of that main cast.
The humor is very reminiscent of 30 Rock. Which considering the cast shouldn't come as a surprise. Robert Carlock and Tina Fey also had their hands in the show. Robert with Sam Means being the creators and Tina Fey being an executive producer help bring the topical humor of 30 Rock to this present day show. It doesn't quite reach the highs of 30 Rock which still stands as one of the greatest comedies of all-time, but after an impressive first season, I won't rule out it eventually rivaling it.
The show's plot for the most part is naturally about how Arthur Tobin is making a documentary about Reggie Dinkins. He doesn't quite know what the purpose of it is and has his own past he's trying to overcome, but they help each other work through their similar problems with not wanting to participate in society. Reggie slowly coming back eventually brings him into contact with the main antagonist, Jerry Basmati, which is brilliantly played by Craig Robinson. These two renew their rivalry and serves as the main plot driver for the last part of the season. Craig Robinson truly was a delight in his portrayal of Jerry and I look forward to how this plays out in future seasons.
Closing / Recommendation
If you enjoyed 30 Rock during its run, you will likely find enjoyment with The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. I highly suggest it even if you are turned off by it centering around Morgan playing a retired NFL player. The cast bounces off each other incredibly well and the humor is topical without being too "in your face" about it.
