Review

Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have done spectacular things in the Star Wars universe. I personally would go as far as saying that Filoni especially has been involved with the absolute best Star Wars has been in the last couple of decades. The Mandalorian show itself is a testament to that. Even this movie seems like it would be amazing on paper. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin aka the titular Mandalorian. Grogu continues to be the best baby ever. Jeremy Allen White even puts a stellar job as the voice of Rotta the Hutt. I didn't even recognize his voice, but he brought the character to life with his voice over work.

It did indeed have almost everything stacked in its favor. It just didn't execute as well as Filoni and Favreau have in the past. I think most of the problems come down to it being a movie. I don't truly know how much the script has changed. Maybe it was completely rewritten and nothing of what would have been another season of the show remains. The parts that are in the movie are solid. I did find the movie enjoyable. It just was a let down from the bar that has been set. It definitely could have hit the mark if the ideas presented were given a bit of room to breathe. It very much was like what I wrote in my review of Good Omens season 3.

With that being said, I did love the set pieces. The action was well done. It was choreographed exceptionally well. The movie also looked beautiful. That is one thing that might not have been done as well if it was another season of a tv show with a lower budget than a movie. The worlds and enemies our duo fought were simply equisite.

Closing / Recommendation

I do recommend the movie to you if you're a Star Wars fan. That's especially if you a little one yourself. Most kids will certainly love the antics of Grogu on the big screen. If you're expecting more of the sublime work Filoni and Favreau have produced in the past, you will likely leave a little disappointed. There's worthy stuff there, but some of the ideas did need space to be expanded on. It just shows how high of a bar Filoni and Favreau have set.
