Filoni works his animated magic again
Review
Maul has always been one of the most fascinating Star Wars characters to me. The prequel trilogy released when I was still a kid. Darth Maul had a cool design and more importantly, he had a double-bladed lightsaber. I loved that version of the lightsaber so much that it has been my go to pick in video games since then. Darth Maul himself was seemingly short lived in the Star Wars universe as he met his end in The Phantom Menace.
Maul himself though? Clearly, it was obvious Maul made an impact as he was brought back in various media over the years. He came back with a vengeance both figuratively and literally as well. From comics to Filoni's early work, Maul was developed into what we see today in Filoni's show where he is the titular character.
The first season of Maul-Shadow Lord got better as it went on and concluded with a must see episode for any Star Wars fan. I do not wish to ruin what happens, but it does fan service right. It's in a way that makes perfect sense and does credit to every character involved. It's right up there with the best moments of The Clone Wars animated series. Season two has already been confirmed. It was green lit even before season one debuted showing that Disney does have faith in it.
The voice acting was all well done. I will especially point out the continued work of Sam Witwer as the voice of Maul. Witwer has been voicing Maul for over a decade and in many different forms of media. He once again does a stellar job here. Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Richard Ayoade as the droid Two-Boots, Wagner Moura as Lawson all round out a standout cast of the main characters. Ayoade's Two-Boots being especially pleasant, but it helps that Two-Boots is a fun droid to start with.
Closing / Recommendation
Maul-Shadow Lord is an easy recommendation for any Star Wars fan especially one that enjoys a more nuanced approach to the light and dark sides of the force conversation. The end of the first does setup for a potentially fun second season that could bring in even more characters from the wider Star Wars universe. It will be tough to top the cameo in the final episode that I won't spoil, but I wouldn't bet against Filoni in the Star Wars animation department.
