I was entertained, but not much else

Review

When you have a movie that essentially only has two characters driving the plot, you absolutely have to get the castings right. In that regard, Apex did well. Charlize Theron as the main character Sasha and Taron Egerton as the main antagonist Ben were inspired choices. I would even argue that nature itself plays a third character. There are some truly breathtaking shots especially if you are scared of heights. The film was well shot in terms of using the environment to add to the plot.

I do want to specifically highlight Taron Egerton's portrayal of Ben. Seeing him play a villain especially one that ended up being as sadistic as Ben was surprising. It isn't something Egerton does often. It reminded me of when David Tennant played the "Purple Man" in Netflix's Jessica Jones. That was a shocking departure from most of his roles especially "The Doctor" during his run on Doctor Who. Like Tennant though, Egerton shows he can play the part of a madman. I truly felt worried and threatened by the character of Ben and that's a testament to Egerton committing to a generally unfamiliar role for him.

Closing / Recommendation

The movie itself ended up being fine. I was entertained. I would suggest it if you have Netflix and have about ninety minutes you want to fill, you could do worse. It's a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but the payoff just wasn't as great as the promise of a Theron and Egerton movie might suggest for some. It's a movie that doesn't do anything particularly amazing nor poor plot wise. How entertained you are will come down to how much you enjoy Theron's Sasha, Egerton's Ben, and the environment itself.
