Parodying insanity is tough, but it pulls it off well enough

Review

Ending anything in a satisfactory manner is a problem many people have in every form of media. It's understandable especially for any IP that makes it as long as The Boys did. The fanbase has their own ideas. There's the original source material. It's just an impossible task to pull it off in a way that makes everyone happy. The most you can hope for is what I believe The Boys pulled off. Giving as many people as possible a logical conclusion to their storylines without having to muddy the waters too much. Showrunner Eric Kripke wasn't perfect, but it was a solid ending.

When it comes to The Boys, what always stood out the most to me is the acting. The entire cast pulls off their portrayals in an at times disturbingly high level. At the top of that list are Antony Starr as Homelander and Karl Urban as Billy Butcher. They were simply exquisite throughout the entire series, but really delivered in this fifth and final season. Which is a good thing because the clash between Homelander and Butcher really is the crux of the show. Seeing Starr and Urban in interviews then seeing them acting these characters out is about as night and day as you get.

While I think the overall season was solid, there were a few drops in quality. The two middle episodes of four and five created a bit of an inverted bell curve between the other six episodes. Those two episodes seem to be there to mostly pad out the time. There were some important parts and I was still entertained, but they definitely were the low part of the season to me. The beginning was a little slow, but it was setting the stage. The ending also sped through things a bit, but that was also just due to needing to get the rest of the major players to one of those logical ending points I mentioned.

Closing / Recommendation

If you watched the first four seasons of The Boys, I do fully recommend finishing the show. It might not fulfill everything you were hoping for, but I don't think anything was too egregious. The endings or everyone were well deserved even if I might have personally changed things a little here and there. When a show openly admits that it's getting tougher to parody things, that's usually a good sign to bring things to an end. The Boys did show admirably.
