Amazing soundtrack and action, but the lore changes could turn some away
Review
Adi Shankar had his hand in a few movies and shows that can be divisive for those fanbases. The most relevant to me since it's also from a video game is Castlevania. For Devil May Cry, Shankar is the running completely running the show. Right from the start, he did say that this would be an alternate timeline and that it wouldn't be canon to the games. He followed through with that for better or worse. Usually, I would wait until the end for my recommendation, but for a show like this, I think it stands to reason to give it at the start. It is a highly entertaining show filled with spectacular action and animation. The plot from season one to season two is engaging. I would recommend it for anyone who likes animated action shows. The exception? If you truly want a show that is loyal to the lore of the Devil May Cry games. Shankar didn't go as far as say the Yakuza tv show did. The characters and elements of the Devil May Cry universe are still very much recognizable. He just changed things around to the story he wished to tell.
That story in season 2 still follows Dante voice by Johnny Yong Bosch who has really made a name for himself in the voice acting world. He does an exquisite job once again playing a younger somehow more headstrong Dante. The goal this time is stop Arius from bringing back Argosax. The latter which is basically the Satan of this universe. The plot takes some twists and turns that are mostly expected especially when Robbie Daymond's Vergil who is Dante's older brother comes into the mix. Robbie Daymond is another VA that has really carved out a space in the voice acting community. His presence in the show elevates it to another level in season two. Graham McTavish as the aforementioned Arius and Scout Taylor-Compton as the always entertaining Lady also provide standout performances in support of the on-screen brothers.
I don't normally point out the animation studio in these reviews, but for Devil May Cry, it is worth it. Studio Mir located in Korea does the animation for the show. They have been on the scene for sixteen years and have some big shows to their name starting with The Legend of Korra. The studio just continues to grow and they really show they deserve it with the crisply animated action they put on display. They have had many big projects and have many more lined up for the future.
I did save the best for last. The soundtrack for both seasons of Devil May Cry have been filled with hit after hit. If you grew up in the late 90s through the 2000s, you will definitely appreciate many of the songs that were very fittingly included.
Closing / Recommendation
While the show ultimately won't live up to expectations for those that wanted a lore accurate DMC series, it more than makes up for the potential disliked changes in my opinion. Strong performances from the voice acting to the animation backed by an enjoyable soundtrack really brought everything together for me. If you can overlook the changes it made, it is definitely worth your time.
